Max

I was supposed to be meeting up with Cobull in less than two hours, yet here I was sitting on a bench near the skytrain station at Inti’s side, watching the world pass us by.

I was pretty sure I could sit next to him forever.

If only there weren’t so many other important things to do.

Poor James was waiting on a father who was dallying with some alien, practically taking a vacation instead of looking for him.

A couple weeks ago, Spencer had said that I had to be able to at least sleep without feeling guilty and I’d taken that on board. I had to take care of myself to get James back. I needed to eat and sleep and keep a clear mind. Especially when putting myself in danger.

The problem was that at Inti’s side, it was like the world stopped. Everything else disappeared.

We didn’t talk much. I’d gotten us coffee and we sat sipping it, enjoying the sunny weather until, eventually, Inti touched my arm, pulling me from my thoughts.

“I must regretfully request that we return to the hotel now,” he said, looking a little sad.

“Of course,” I said. “Is it your tail?”

It was looking a little different. Even I could tell that the scales were lackluster compared to their usual shimmer.

He nodded.

“I don’t want this day to end. This is more amazing than anything I’ve ever seen.”

It was just a crowded street with tall buildings everywhere you looked and the skytrain tracks cutting between the buildings.

I wasn’t sure what the appeal was, but I knew he meant it. Going to new places often was exciting no matter what you were doing. Soaking in the atmosphere was half the fun of travel, after all.

I waved at Shava, who was leaning against a pillar nearby watching us, while Torkan kept watch on the other side.

She nodded at once and called for a car.

Before I could stand, Inti reached out, settling his hand over my arm to keep me in place.

Our eyes met, and my heart started racing because I knew at once what was coming.

“If it changes things, you should know,” he said quietly, “the moment I first saw you, I thought you were breathtaking.”

My own breath caught at his words. I didn’t know what to say or how to deny what he was implying, but he wasn’t done, eager to drive the nail in.

“The heart you have shown me only makes me want you more.”

His thumb stroked my arm, sending a shiver through my body.

“You were afraid,” I tried to argue. “When you thought that I bought you for sex, you hated me.”

“Because I thought I was wrong about the person I had seen.” His grip tightened. “I wasn’t. You intrigue me. You would even if I wasn’t in this chair or on this planet. Even if you walked up to a beach I was visiting on Skrit, you would make my heart race.”

I’d never had anyone say anything like that about me. Even my late wife hadn’t been the romantic type.
